The profession of pharmacy is gaining a healthcare provider status worldwide and due to a steady increase in the number of people requiring heath care services, the profession was able to escape the brunt of recession .The need of the hour is to train and equip pharmacy aspirants into competent professionals in whatever career option they make since the scope of pharmacy in India after bachelor’s degree is varied.

The course aims at dealing with teaching students how to dispense and prepare medicines .It makes the student aware of drug related information to the public. The aspirants of this course will also be by the end of their course being able to give advice on health care programmes and prescriptions given by doctors. They are also able enough to evaluate drugs and drug use pattern.

Scope of Pharmacy

Research and Development

Pharmacy industry worldwide thrive on continuous research and development. Graduates, post graduates and Ph.Ds. are highly in demand to pursue research in the fields of new drug development, formulation development, clinical trials and toxicological studies. Graduates may be placed as research assistants and scientists.

Regulatory Bodies

There are bodies that control and regulate medicines in India and elsewhere. In the United States, it is USFDA. India has its own standards body called Central Drug Standard Control Organization. (CDSCO), which maintains that its quality control measures are stringent enough to ensure that drugs are safe. They can work in the capacity of drug inspectors and even adore the highest position of drug controller of India.

Analysis and Testing

Analysis and Testing are indispensable procedures in the drug manufacturing industry specially to maintain proper quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA).Highly skilled professionals are needed to carry out sensitive analytical tests and to handle sophisticated instruments and equipment. Professionals may be placed as analysts in government drug testing labs and manufacturing companies.

Production and Manufacturing

Production and manufacturing of medicines, biotechnological products, surgical dressings/ medical devices and equipment, Ayurveda/homeopathic medicines, veterinary medicines need professional involvement. Even the production of cosmetics, toiletries and dental products need professional help. Graduates may be placed as production supervisors, controllers and managers.

Marketing

The pharmaceuticals sales and marketing are considered to be a highly technical arena and provide good monetary benefits to the professionals. The designation may vary from marketing representatives, product specialists and managers.

Hospital and Community Pharmacies

It is mandatory in developed countries to hire pharmacy graduates to dispense medications in community as well as hospital pharmacies. The case may be the same even in India in future. In developed countries, doctors make the diagnosis and pharmacists decide the medicines and their dosage.
